Safe, gentle ear wax removal.

Feel the difference immediately, with expert microsuction or curettage by specialist audiologists across four Melbourne clinics.

Feel the difference immediately

A blocked ear affects more than your hearing. Conversations feel muffled. Sounds are dull. There is a constant feeling of pressure that builds until it is impossible to ignore.

Most clients notice clearer hearing and immediate relief straight after treatment. One simple appointment is usually all it takes to feel comfortable again.

Specialist audiologists

Ear wax removal is performed by university-trained, accredited audiologists. That specialist knowledge means your ears are in expert hands, and any concerns about your hearing health can be addressed at the same appointment.

One appointment, two insights

Once the wax is cleared, your audiologist can assess how well you are hearing at the same appointment. For many clients this is the first moment they realise their hearing has been affected.

Precision equipment

We use the latest microsuction and curette technology, performed under magnification – the safest and most precise method available.

Four clinics, same-week appointments

With clinics in Wantirna, Boronia, Doreen and Surrey Hills, a convenient appointment is always close to home.

Removing Ear Wax

Two methods – We’ll find the right method for you.

Microsuction

Microsuction uses a gentle suction device to carefully remove wax while your audiologist views the ear canal under magnification. This allows for a precise and controlled approach with no water and no mess. Most clients find the process quick and comfortable, with immediate relief once the blockage is cleared.

Manual removal (curettage)

Sometimes specialist instruments are the better option, depending on the type of wax or the shape of your ear canal. Your audiologist carefully removes the wax using manual techniques designed to be gentle and precise. We will always explain which method is most suitable for you and why.

What to expect

A calm, step-by-step process

Assessment

Before anything is removed, your audiologist takes a close look inside your ear canal to understand what is causing the blockage and how much wax is present. This helps us choose the most suitable and comfortable way
to clear it.

Removal

The wax is carefully and precisely removed using microsuction or curette under magnification. We will talk you through the entire process as we go so you always know what is happening.

All clear check

Once the wax has been removed, we check both ears to make sure everything looks healthy and clear. If we notice anything that needs further attention, we will explain it clearly and talk you through the next steps.

Immediate relief

Most clients notice an immediate improvement in hearing and comfort. The entire appointment can take around 30 minutes, and most people leave feeling noticeably clearer.

What is ear wax and why does it build up?

Ear wax is a natural substance produced by your ears to protect and keep the ear canal healthy. In most cases it moves out on its own, but sometimes it can build up and cause a blockage. This is more common in people who use cotton buds, wear hearing aids or ear plugs, or who simply produce more wax than usual.

How do I know if I need ear wax removal?

A blocked or full feeling in the ear, muffled hearing, ringing, earache, or difficulty hearing in noisy environments can all be signs of wax build-up. Ear wax blockage is very common and in most cases can be resolved quickly and simply.

Does ear wax removal hurt?

No. Ear wax removal using microsuction is typically painless. Most clients describe it as feeling like gentle suction inside the ear, the sound can briefly seem louder than expected. Some momentary mild discomfort may be experienced for compacted or long-standing buildup.

We explain everything as we go so you always know what to expect.

How long does ear wax removal take?

Most appointments take around 30 minutes from start to finish, including your assessment, wax removal and final ear check.

Is microsuction safe?

Yes. Microsuction is considered the preferred method for professional ear wax removal because it is precise, gentle and performed under magnification by a qualified audiologist.

Can I use cotton buds to clean my ears?

No. Cotton buds push wax deeper into the canal rather than removing it, and fibres from the cotton bud get deposited in the ear canal which contributes to the build-up over time. Your ears are naturally self-cleaning, and if wax is causing symptoms, professional removal is usually the safest approach.

Do I need a referral for ear wax removal?

No referral is needed. You can simply call or book online at any Knox Audiology clinic.

Is ear wax removal covered by Medicare?

Ear wax removal is not covered by Medicare as a standalone service. Some private health insurance extras policies do provide a rebate, it is worth checking your policy before you book.

How often should I get my ears cleaned?

Most people only need ear wax removal when symptoms develop. Some clients, particularly those who wear hearing aids or naturally produce more wax, may benefit from more regular appointments. Your audiologist can guide you on what is right for you.

Ready to feel the difference?

A blocked ear can often be sorted in a single appointment. Most clients
leave feeling noticeably clearer – and for many, it is the first step to understanding their hearing health.
