Everything you need to know before you book

Hearing well, at every stage of life

Hearing changes often happen gradually, most people don’t notice them until they start
affecting everyday conversations.
A man wearing a brown jacket and white patterned shirt faces a woman wearing a tan vest over a black shirt and a colorful patterned scarf, as they talk in a room.

Adults noticing changes

Asking people to repeat themselves. Struggling to follow conversations in noisy restaurants or family gatherings. Turning the TV up higher than others prefer.

Children and families

Delayed speech development, difficulty following instructions at home or school, or a recommendation from a teacher or GP are all reasons to have your child’s hearing assessed.

Seniors staying connected

Maintaining connection to family, friends and community is one of the most important reasons to stay on top of hearing health as you age.

what to expect

Your appointment, from start to finish

We start with you

Before any testing begins, your audiologist will take a few minutes to understand your hearing concerns, your lifestyle and any relevant medical history. No two people are the same, and your appointment begins with that in mind.

The test

You will complete a series of simple, painless assessments in a quiet, sound-treated booth. This includes listening to tones through headphones, responding to speech, and a gentle check of your middle ear function.

Most standard adult appointments take around 30 minutes.

Your results, explained clearly

Your audiologist will walk you through your results on the day, in plain, easy-to-understand language. A written report is then provided within one week and sent to you, and to your referring practitioner if applicable.

Your next step is yours to make

A hearing test does not automatically lead to a recommendation for hearing aids. Your audiologist will guide you through the next steps towards your goal of better hearing.

Care that goes beyond the hearing test

Knox Audiology has been caring for hearing health in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs since the mid-1990s. That depth of experience shapes every appointment – not just in what we test, but in how we listen, explain and guide you through the process.

Every audiologist at Knox Audiology is university-trained with a Master’s in Clinical Audiology and is an Accredited Member of Audiology Australia (AAudA), bringing a careful, whole-person approach that looks beyond the audiogram to understand how hearing is affecting your everyday life.

If your hearing test shows something that needs further investigation, ENT specialists consult on-site at our Wantirna clinic, providing a clear and established pathway for further review without needing to start again elsewhere.

Understanding your hearing test

A hearing test is a series of simple, comfortable checks that help us understand how well you are hearing different levels of sound and speech

Pure tone audiometry

The core adult hearing test. You will listen to a series of tones through headphones and indicate when you can hear them. This helps map your hearing across a range of pitches and volumes.

Speech audiometry

This checks how clearly you can understand speech, including in background noise. You will hear a series of words through headphones that you will repeat back to the audiologist to provide a fuller picture of your hearing ability.

Tympanometry

A quick, painless check of how your middle ear and eardrum are working. A small ear plug attached to a prob is placed gently in the ear canal to measure how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure.

Specialist assessments

If your hearing test suggests something that needs a more detailed review, we offer a range
of specialist assessments within the same trusted environment:

Do I need a referral for a hearing test?

A referral is required for a hearing test if you wish to receive a Medicare rebate. Pensioners and veteran cardholders may also be eligible for fully subsidised services through the Hearing Services Program. Please ask at reception if you would like further information.

How long does a hearing test take?

A standard adult hearing test takes around 30 minutes. This includes the assessment itself as well as a clear verbal explanation of your results on the day.

Is a hearing test covered by Medicare?

Yes, when you have a valid GP or specialist referral. Medicare provides a rebate of $36–$54, and a gap fee may apply depending on your appointment.

How do I know if I need a hearing test?

Common signs include asking people to repeat themselves, finding conversations harder in noisy places, turning the TV up louder than others prefer, or missing parts of conversations. Hearing changes are often gradual, so many people do not notice them straight away. If you notice anything different about your ears of hearing, it is worth booking in for a check up.

What age should children have their hearing tested?

Children can have their hearing tested from 9 months of age (corrected age for premature babies). A referral is required for a Medicare rebate, but not to book an appointment.

Does a hearing test hurt?

No, hearing tests are painless and straightforward. Most of the assessment involves listening to tones through headphones. In some cases, a gentle air puff is used to check middle ear function, but nothing is inserted deeply into the ear for standard testing.

What happens if my hearing test shows hearing loss?

A hearing test result does not automatically mean you will need hearing aids. Your audiologist will explain your results clearly on the day and provide a written report within one week. Next steps may include monitoring, a GP follow-up or a discussion about options to help with daily communication which may include hearing aids, depending on your needs.

Can I get a hearing test without seeing a GP first?

Yes, you can book a hearing test directly without seeing a GP first. A referral is only needed if you want to access a Medicare rebate or certain funding programs. Many clients choose to book first and speak with their GP afterwards if needed.

No pressure. No rushed decisions.

Just thoughtful care, honest guidance and support that helps you stay connected to your world.
