Only Half of Australians with Hearing Loss Have Hearing Aids – Why?

Hearing loss is one of the most common health conditions in Australia, yet so many people delay taking action.
New research from the Hearing Care Industry Association (HCIA)1 reveals a surprising and concerning reality: less than half of Australians with hearing loss use hearing aids, and most people wait four to six years before doing anything about it.
At Knox Audiology, we regularly meet people who say, “I wish I had done something sooner.” This research highlights why early action matters – not just for hearing, but for overall wellbeing.
The Key Findings: What the Research Shows
The HCIA study surveyed nearly 15,000 people, including over 1,200 with hearing loss. The results were clear:
• Only 45% of people with hearing loss have hearing aids
• Most people wait 4–6 years after noticing hearing changes before acting
• 70% of hearing aid users said they should have gotten help sooner
This delay means many Australians are living for years with unnecessary communication challenges.
Why Do People Wait So Long?
While there’s no definitive reason, the study identified several common barriers:
• Belief that hearing is “good enough” in most situations
• Cost concerns
• Worries about comfort or effectiveness
• Stigma or embarrassment about wearing hearing aids
• Competing life priorities
• Some people also assume hearing loss is simply part of ageing and something they must “put up with.”
But hearing loss is treatable, and delaying support can have wider impacts than many realise.
The Real Impact of Waiting
Hearing loss doesn’t just affect your ears – it affects how you live. People who delay treatment may experience:
• Difficulty following conversations
• Reduced participation in social activities
• Increased listening fatigue
• Lower confidence in work or social settings
Many participants in the study said they missed out on social experiences and felt the impact on their mental and emotional health before getting hearing aids.
The Good News: Hearing Aids Make a Real Difference
One of the most encouraging findings from the study is just how positive the outcomes are once people take action:
• 96% said hearing aids improved their quality of life
• 75% were satisfied with sound quality and features
• 87% said their hearing aids performed as well as or better than expected
Hearing aid users also reported:
• Better communication and relationships
• Increased confidence
• Improved sleep and reduced fatigue
• Lower risk of depression
• Greater ease at work, including better job opportunities and performance
In short, the benefits often far outweigh the concerns.
Busting the Stigma Around Hearing Aids
A common reason for delay is stigma, however the research suggests this is changing:
62% of hearing aid users said they were not judged or rejected because of their devices
In fact, people were more likely to react negatively to untreated hearing loss than to hearing aids
Modern hearing aids are also smaller, more discreet, and more advanced than ever before where many connect to smartphones and adapt automatically to different environments.
Hearing Health Is Linked to Overall Wellbeing
The study also highlighted broader health benefits of addressing hearing loss.
Hearing aid use was associated with lower risk of depression, improved sleep quality, reduced fatigue
And better overall quality of life.
There is also growing awareness of the link between hearing loss and cognitive health, reinforcing the importance of early intervention.
Why Early Action Matters
Waiting several years to address hearing loss means spending years:
• Straining to hear
• Missing parts of conversations
• Adapting to reduced sound input
The earlier hearing loss is identified and managed, the easier it is to:
• Maintain communication skills
• Stay socially engaged
• Reduce listening effort
• Protect long-term wellbeing
