Hearing Technology Update – How the Phonak Sphere Is Changing the Way People Hear

At Knox Audiology, we always watch for new hearing aid technology as it is released into the market. Launched in August 2024, the Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio range has already made a significant impact on how hearing aids are designed and experienced. This new generation of hearing technology has brought major advancements, particularly in managing speech clarity in noisy environments, which has led to multiple awards in the hearing aid sector. It was recently recognised as the Best Overall Hearing Aid in Background Noise (2025) and received the 2024 Innovator Award in Hearing Aid: RIC Category by Hearing Health and Technology Matters.
Here are the key innovations in the Phonak Infinio Sphere that are transforming the hearing experience:
DEEPSONIC AI Chip
Phonak has integrated a real-time AI chip into the Infinio Sphere hearing aids, enabling ultra-fast speech processing through deep learning. Trained on over 22 million sound samples, this chip adapts to various listening situations with exceptional precision. With the capability to perform 7.7 billion operations per second using 4.5 million neural connections, the system can deliver up to a 10 dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio. This is a major leap forward in enhancing hearing in noisy environments, far surpassing conventional hearing aids in background noise suppression.
Spheric Speech Clarity
This feature enables users to hear and understand speech from any direction, even in challenging noise environments. Using the DEEPSONIC AI chip and advanced directional microphones, the device dynamically follows the direction of conversations. Combined with the 10 dB background noise reduction, it ensures speech is picked up clearly, even in loud settings like restaurants or social gatherings.
AutoSense OS™ 6.0
Phonak has upgraded its proprietary adaptive signal processing software to AutoSense OS™ 6.0. This intelligent system continuously analyzes the user’s surroundings and automatically adjusts sound settings in real time. It classifies listening environments into seven categories (e.g., “speech in noise,” “music,” “quiet room”) and adapts gain, noise reduction, and directional focus to optimize speech clarity and listening comfort. Transitions between environments are now smoother and more intuitive than ever.
Enhanced Connectivity
The Audéo Sphere Infinio features the latest in Bluetooth technology with true universal compatibility—supporting iOS, Android, and most Bluetooth-enabled devices, including many older phones. Thanks to updated hardware, the devices offer greater connection stability, improved streaming quality, and more reliable hands-free calling. Users can now maintain connections at double the typical range, and the aids support simultaneous pairing with two devices at once. While Low Energy Bluetooth and Auracast are not yet available in the current model, these features are expected in future firmware updates.
Durability
Engineered in Switzerland, the Phonak Infinio Sphere has been rigorously tested to ensure long-lasting durability, undergoing over 10,000 hours of development and 135 individual, stringent quality tests. It exceeds the industry-standard IP68 rating, offering exceptional water and sweat resistance. To provide lifelong protection, Phonak has incorporated multiple layers of defense. These include a Teflon-like hydrophobic plasma coating on the outer housing and a parylene coating on the internal electronic components, offering superior resistance to moisture and dust compared to traditional coatings. The rechargeable battery is sealed using precision laser welding, making it more robust and reliable over time. Additional enhancements include specially designed microphone inlets for added protection against damage, and a redesigned receiver that no longer requires a pin for attachment or removal. Combined with extra protective coatings, the receiver is now more moisture-resistant and less susceptible to wear and tear.
Design
In addition to its technological enhancements, the Audéo Sphere Infinio boasts a sleek and discreet design. It is currently the smallest receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aid on the market, combining form, function, and style in a compact and modern package.
The Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio delivers more transparent sound, smarter noise reduction, and seamless connectivity, making everyday listening easier and more enjoyable. It’s not just a hearing aid, it’s a smarter way to hear life.
